Comprehensive Waterway Management

Actions on comprehensive waterway management

The following action for achieving the targets regarding comprehensive waterway management in the Danube region is specified in the Action Plan (SEC(2010) 1489 final) which accompanies the Communication of the European Commission on the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region (COM(2010) 715 final) of 8.12.2010:

  • To improve comprehensive waterway management of the Danube and its tributaries
    Key tasks: improve management with regard to waterway maintenance (surveying, dredging), flood protection and ecological measures; create common standards for waterway management in the Danube basin; continue and intensify the cooperation of national waterway management bodies

Aimed at the implementation of the above-mentioned action, the following projects and project ideas have been reported to or identified by the Priority Area Coordinators:

Romania: Rehabilitation and extension of the hydrometric station network on the Romanian Danube stretch (i-HyQ) (Status: 29/11/2016)

Bulgaria: Improvement of the navigational systems and topohydrographic measurements on the Danube River – Phase 2 (Status: 13/10/2016)

Network of Danube Waterway Administrations (NEWADA) (project example in EUSDR Action Plan) (project completed)

Network of Danube Waterway Administrations - Data & User Orientation (NEWADA duo) (Status: 07/12/2011)

Danube River Research and Management (DREAM) (Status: 07/01/2013)

Effects of climate change on the inland waterway networks (ECCONET) (project completed)

Extreme weather impacts on European networks of transport (EWENT) (project completed)

Bulgaria: Improvement of the systems for navigation and topo-hydrographic measurements on the Danube River (Status: 05/04/2013)

Romania: Set up of a support system for hydrographical works on the Danube in order to ensure minimal navigation depths (BORD) (Status: 31/10/2012)

Unification of the reference systems used in Romania and Bulgaria on the Danube river and introduction of the European systems (Status: 11/10/2012)

To create an approach and a web platform to provide complete realtime information concerning Danube navigation and connections with all modes of transport (project example in EUSDR Action Plan)

Romania: Modernizing the navigation signalization system on the Danube–Black Sea Canal (project completed)
